Assam shuttlers shine in NE championship

IMPHAL, Oct 30: Assam defeated host Manipur 3-1 and 3-0 in the finals of the senior and junior categories respectively in the ongoing four-day North East Zone Inter State Badminton Championship organised by the Manipur Badminton Association here at the DM College indoor stadium.

Though Hirakjoti Neog (Assam) lost to L Unilkumar (Manipur) 21-23, 21-16, 15-21 in the men�s singles final of the senior category, Ashmita Chaliha (Assam) beat N Angita (Manipur) 21-12, 18-21, 21-13 in women�s singles while Anjan Buragohain/Ranjan Burgohain (Assam) beat W James/RK Cinir (Manipur) 24- 22, 21-17 in men�s doubles.

In women�s doubles Kaberi Phukan/Bornali Konwar (Assam) beat N Somibal/N Purnima (Manipur) 21-13, 11-21, 21-15.

In the junior category boy�s singles final, Orijit Chaliha (Assam) beat L Unilkumar (Manipur) 22-20, 21-7, while his compatriot Ashmita Chaliha (Assam) defeated N Angita (Manipur) 21-12, 21-18 in girl�s singles. Rishav Sarma/Rajsekhar Das (Assam) lost to K Dingku/K Manjit (Manipur)

22-24, 20-22 in boy�s doubles. Ashmita Chaliha/Manali Bora (Assam) beat M Somibala/N Purnima 23-21, 29-27 in girl�s doubles.

Earlier, in the semi-finals, host Manipur beat Mizoram

3-2 (senior team), Arunachal Pradesh 3-2 (junior team) while Assam beat Meghalaya 3-0 (senior team), Sikkim 3-0 (junior team) to reach the finals

State Parliamentary Secretary of Minor Irrigation and Information and Public Relations K Meghachandra will be the Chief Guest in the closing function of the championships which is scheduled to be held tomorrow.

Altogether eight States of the North Eastern region, including Sikkim are taking part in the championship where the host team has fielded maximum 23 players. The Assam team has been represented by 22 members.
