Assam Rifles lift Airtel GTC Challenge Trophy

GUWAHATI, Sept 13 � In a thrilling encounter, debutante in the tournament, Assam Rifles defeated local favourites Sunrise Athletic Club 3-1 in the final of the 3rd Airtel GTC Challenge Trophy played at the Judges� Field yesterday evening.

Assam Rifles drew first blood in the 31st minute through a sitter from Abel Sama. Thereafter, Bulu Jugdung scored a superb goal to increase the lead in the 50th minute. In the 71st minute, Lairung Kima scored another goal for the champion team. Sunrise scored a consolation goal in the 87th minute of the game through Nigerian Enoch Amofo.

In the closing ceremony, Gauhati Town Club felicitated former renowned footballers of the State Niren Mech, Suranjan Chatterjee, Biswajit Dutta, Jiban Barua and Santosh Goswami. GTC also presented newly instituted awards of Best Football Coach and Best Referee of Assam for the season 2009-10 to Ganesh Rai of ASEB and Dipak Kumar Dey respectively. The awards consisted of plaques and cash Rs 10,000.
