NEW DELHI, Dec 20 Assam takes the lead in having highest number of projects suffering delay, with a record number of 63 ventures suffering delay of over three years. The State has been sanctioned 173 projects.

The Ministry for Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) has sanctioned 681 projects in the region under the Non Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR), out of which 152 have suffered delays of over a year and 168 suffering delay, of over three years, Minister of State for DoNER Paban Singh Ghatowar said in a Lok Sabha reply.

Among the NE States, Assam was sanctioned the highest number of projects under the Central scheme followed by Arunachal Pradesh, which had been sanctioned 106 projects.

At least 42 projects in the State witnessed delays of over a year and 63 beyond three years. The BTC projects have also slipped. Two are behind schedule by over a year and 13 by over three years.

The projects are implemented by State Governments. The main reasons for their delay include limitation of technical and professional expertise, the restricted working season due to prolonged rainy season and the prevailing law-and-order situation, Ghatowar said.
