GUWAHATI, Feb 25 That Assam Police has no dearth of talent in diverse spheres especially the sporting arena came to the fore when three of its achievers runner Abhijit Baruah, body-builder Niranjan Kumar and strongman Ratneswar Neog were accorded a felicitation at the Guwahati Press Club today in recognition of their remarkable feats.

The programme was held under the aegis of the All Assam Police Association.

While Abhijit Baruah is a world record-holder in 24-hour running (156.2 km), Niranjan Kumar is a former Mr India who has earned many honours in body-building, and Ratneswar Neog is a Limca Book record-holder in pulling a heavy vehicle (over 14 tons) with his hair and also a claimant to the world record.

Neog later gave a demonstration of his extraordinary ability by pulling a bus tied to his hair near the TC Girls High School rotary point in front of a jam-packed crowd.

Earlier, addressing the gathering at the Press Club, Kula Saikia, Additional Director General of Police (APRO), said that pursuit of excellence was the domain of a chosen few who leave no stone unturned to attain their cherished goal.

It is a point to ponder over why a few people are inclined to attempt extraordinary feats. They are endowed with a very strong motivational force, which is a subject of study for social scientistseven we have a few such special persons in our midst we have made the State proud through their stupendous feats, Saikia said.

Saikia said that Assam Police had a history of excelling in sporting activities, and its athletes secured as many as 22 medals in the last National Games held in Assam.

Veteran sportsperson and organizer Pulin Das, while lauding the feat of the three achievers, said that discipline and single-minded devotion held the key to attaining amazing feats. Das also stressed the need for developing a better police-public relation in the greater interest of society.

The three achievers said that dedication and commitment together with the zeal to do something different motivated them to take up their respective disciplines and excel in those.

Pabitra Sarma, president of the All Assam Police Association, chaired the proceedings of the function.
