Assam player upset former champion

GUWAHATI, March 29 � Assam player Ajit Das caused a major upset in the ongoing Mridul Gogoi Memorial 30th Senior National and Inter State Carrom Championship at the Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here today.

Ajit defeated former world champion and Arjuna Award winner A Mariya Irudayam of Air India 2-1 in a zone-10 league match. The Assam player has qualified for the knock-out stage from this zone with six points.

Meanwhile, State Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain entered the pre-quarterfinal stage in the veterans category. Today he defeated Imran Ahmed of Jammu and Kashmir 2-0 and later got walk over against SJ Mohan. Hussain topped zone 8 and in the pre-quarterfinal knock-out, he will play against Lallan of Bihar tomorrow. The Minister earlier represented the State team in the junior and senior nationals in 1976, 1983 and 1986 respectively.

Leading women players like I Illavazhaki, R Sharmila, P Nirmala, Anupam Kedar, Farheen, M Parimala Devi, M Mukhim, A Poonarasi, Anuraju, Barsha Baruah, G Revathy, Aayesha Mohd, Kavitha, Debajani Tamuly, S Dwarnalatha, Sangeetha, Rashmi Kumari are in a advantageous position in their respective zones. In the men�s section, B Radhakrishnan, Sandeep Deorukhkar, Surujuddin, Prakash Gawkwad and Bijoy Rabha are leading in their zones.

Almost all the league matches in different zones have been completed and knock-out competitions will begin tomorrow.
