Assam lift Mir Iqbal Trophy

GUWAHATI, March 23 � After 1981, Assam have become champions in the National Sub-junior Football Championship for the Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy beating Chandigarh 2-0 in Goa today. The first salvo was fired from the boots of Assam�s Milan Basumatary in the 11th minute. The second goal came in the dying moments of the match when Zehirul Islam found the back of the net in the 89th minute. In preliminary group league matches, Assam defeated Chandigarh 1-0 and played a 1-1 draw against Madhya Pradesh, but went down 0-3 to Jharkhand. In the semifinals, Assam trounced Orissa 5-0.

Assam Football Association secretary Ankur Dutta has lauded the effort of district associations for this performance as they worked hard in building their own teams for district tournaments.

Earlier, Assam had won the championship for four consecutive years from 1978 to 1981. Captain Milan Basumatary was adjudged best player of the final.
