By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Nov 15 - The United Assam Association UK celebrated its annual weekend event, Assam Day 2016, at Eastwood Hall Hotel, Nottingham, England, a press release received here stated. The programme was attended by over 100 members and guests from all over the UK and overseas visitors.

President Dr Benu Kakati welcomed the members, guests and artists. This year three guest artists were invited to perform in the cultural programme. Cultural Secretary Dr Gaurav Goswami introduced the artists to the audience. Mayukh Hazarika and his wife Laili Dutta, whom the Association had flown over from Mumbai, delighted the audience with an excellent musical performance of popular evergreen Assamese songs that left many feeling nostalgic. Their young daughter, Ahiri, accompanied them on stage for one song. Mayukh and his family were able to extend their stay in the UK to perform at the celebration of Late Dr Bhupen Hazarika's 90th birthday in September in London. Internationally acclaimed Sunita Menon presented her first original Assamese song as a duet with Dwijen Baruah. She also sang beautifully in Hindi, Bengali, Arabic and English to cater for the younger generation and the non-Assamese audience. Local artists Nilmoni Sikdar, Mamoni Sharma, Sohida Haque, Gita Cox, Chinu Kishore, Gaurav and Soma Goswami and youngsters Prince Kishore and Ajay Saikia enhanced the show on Saturday evening.

The day started with a general quiz for the adults followed by family sports. The guest artists again put on a marvellous show until the annual gala dinner at which Ayesha Hazarika MBE was the guest speaker. She spoke about her political career and her Assamese upbringing. Distinguished guests Rajni Basumatary (actress, producer, writer and director) and Sirish Jain (Consul and Head of Post at the Indian Consulate in Thailand) were also in attendance.
