Assam celebrates R-Day with enthusiasm

GUWAHATI, Jan 27 � The 65th Republic Day was celebrated throughout the State with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour. Our Correspondents report �

Mangaldai: The Republic Day was celebrated across Darrang district with fervour and enthusiasm. State Fisheries Minister Basanta Das unfurled the Tricolour while attending as the chief guest the Republic Day function at Kachari Maidan, Mangaldai, organised centrally by the Darrang district administration. The chief guest inspected the guard of honour and took the salute of the march past. In his speech, he recalled the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and also spoke on various developmental activities undertaken by the different government departments.

Digboi: Republic Day was celebrated at the sub-divisional level at Margherita with a variety of programmes. The flag hoisting ceremony was held in the Central Field at 9 am. Bolin Chetia, Parliamentary Secretary, Govt of Assam, was the chief guest. Chetia paid tributes to the martyrs by lighting the traditional lamp. He was then accompanied by SDO (Civil) Adil Khan and SDPO Pradeep Saikia for inspecting the guard of honour and hoisting the tricolour.

Badarpur: Republic Day was observed throughout Badarpur with a lot of enthusiasm. Flag-hoisting ceremony and several functions were organised by different clubs and organisations and different educational institutions, business establishments, etc. The main function was held at Badarpur NC College playground in the presence of distinguished citizens, students, teachers and all sections of people.

Kalaigaon: The 65th Republic Day was celebrated at Kalaigaon and Tangla in a befitting manner. At Kalaigaon, Dina Moni Das, Circle Officer, Kalaigaon Revenue Circle, hoisted the National Flag at Gandhi Bakori field here in the presence of nearly a thousand people. The Circle Officer paid floral tributes to thousands of people who sacrificed their lives for the country. He specially mentioned great contributions of freedom fighters of Kalaigaon in India�s freedom struggle, namely Late Pani Ram Das, Late Bangshi Sarma and Late Kamaleswar Sarma.

Tangla: DN Hazarika, Circle Officer, Harisinga Revenue Circle, hoisted the National Flag at Tangla HS School playground in the presence of nearly three thousand people. Twenty-one contingents of NCC, Scouts and Guides and various local schools took part in the march past. Rajya Sabha MP Santias Kunjur attended the ceremony as the distinguished guest.

Jagiroad: The Republic Day was celebrated at Jagiroad by various oranisations in their respective places. At Jagiroad College, Dr BC Neog, principal, unfurled the Tricolour while David Barman, principal, Indus Academy, hoisted the National Flag in the presence of students, teachers and the parents. A quiz competition was organised among the students on the occasion. Dhiraj Saud, Circle Officer, Mayong hoisted the National Flag at the office campus, while Jitendra Kumar Deka, vice-president, Jagiroad Sports Association, hoisted the Tricolour at the playground.

Tinsukia: Amid tight security, the Republic Day was celebrated in Tinsukia at the Industrial Trade Institute (ITI) field. Unfurling the Tricolour, State Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi harped on the government�s achievements in the last 10 years but said the bandh culture has become a hurdle in the path of development. He added that many other tasks are lying ahead for further development in the State and sought the people�s cooperation in this regard. The Minister inspected the guard of honour and paid homage to the martyrs. He also distributed prizes to the persons and organisations that have excelled in various fields. Freedom fighter Lila Bora was felicitated by the Minister on the occasion.

Sivasagar: Republic Day celebrations were held amid tight security in the district headquarters. Sarat Saikia, Parliamentary Secretary, Finance, hoisted the Tricolour at the Boarding Field in Sivasagar at the function organised by the Sivasagar district administration. Saikia in his speech recalled the contributions of the martyrs and also highlighted various developmental programmes of the State Government. Schools, colleges, government and non-government offices, student organisations, NGOs etc., celebrated the day with a variety of programmes.

Nagaon: State Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain unfurled the Tricolour at the central function held at the Nurul Amin Stadium. The Minister paid tributes to the martyrs and congratulated classical vocalist Parveen Sultana and others for receiving the Padma awards. He also took the opportunity to highlight various schemes implemented by the government. Hussain took the salute of the march past presented by police, NCC, Home Guards and students. The Republic Day was also observed by Nagaon Press Club, Nowgong Girls� College and others.

Namrup: Three major industrial houses, educational institutions and other organisations yesterday celebrated Republic Day with patriotic fervour. At the Assam Petrochemicals Ltd, the Tricolour was unfurled by its Managing Director Ratul Bordoloi. At BVFCL, the Tricolour was hoisted by its CMD, SD Singh, which was followed by various programmes. The educational institutions of Namrup observed the Day with great enthusiasm.

Tezpur: The Republic Day was celebrated here at the Church Field and all the government offices and educational institutions in and around Tezpur. Unfurling the National Flag, the Planning Minister Tanka Bahadur Rai said it was a good sign that people have come out to celebrate the Day despite the threat of insurgency. He also harped on the present government�s achievements. Earlier, he received the guard of honour. The ceremony was also attended by DC Sonitpur Lalit Gogoi, SP Sanjukta Parashar, MLA Rajen Barthakur and others.

Dergaon: In the central programme held at the Naren Sarmah field here, the Tricolour was unfurled by the Dergaon Circle Officer Tapan Kr Gohain. Earlier, freedom fighter Jogen Borah initiated the smriti tarpan programme. Dergaon MLA Arati Hazarika also attended the ceremony. The Day was also observed at Police Training Complex here. The National Flag was hoisted by DIG Prabin Saikia at the central programme held at PTC Stadium, where Satyaraj Hazarika, principal in-charge of Police Training College was present along with others.

Goalpara: In the Republic Day�s main function organised at the Junior Technical School ground here by the district administration, the Tricolour was unfurled by Minister Pranati Phukan in the presence of several dignitaries and a huge crowd. Phukan paid rich tributes to the freedom fighters and recollected their sacrifices and then highlighted the achievements of the government in various fields.

Naharkatia: Celebrations related to the 65th Republic Day were almost non-existent at Naharkatia and its neighbouring areas. Apart from the traditional hoisting of the Tricolour at government offices and educational institutions, no other activities were seen.

Diphu: The people of the trouble-torn Karbi Anglong district defied the diktat issued by militant outfits to mark the Republic Day in a befitting way. A grand parade was taken out at the KASA Stadium where Minister Kharsing Engti hoisted the National Flag in the presence of senior officials and citizens. The Day was also celebrated at Hamren and Bokajan subdivisions.

Haflong: Dima Hasao district also celebrated the Republic Day with great enthusiasm on Sunday. Debojeet Thaosen, Chief Executive Member, NC Hills Autonomous Council, unfurled the Tricolour at NL Daolagupu Sports Complex in the presence of the chairman, deputy chairman, executive members, police and government officials.

Teok: The Republic Day function was organised centrally at Teok High School field where the Tricolour was unfurled by Khanindra Kumar Das, Circle Officer, Teok. He inspected the guard of honour presented by CRPF, NCC and Scouts and Guides.

Kokrajhar: BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary unfurled the Tricolour at the Govt HS & MP School playground. In his speech he emphasised on the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in the BTC area.

Lumding: In the main Republic Day function here at the Saheed field, the Tricolour was hoisted by Dilip Terang, magistrate, in the presence of a huge gathering. Various government offices and educational institutions celebrated the Day in a befitting manner.
