Assam cannot take burden of migrants

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 5 - Referring to the support of the Patriotic Front of Assam (PFA) to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslim minorities from Bangladesh and Pakistan, senior journalist DN Chakravartty, a member of the Front, has clarified that he had categorically mentioned that Assam, which had taken the burden of Bangladeshi migrants up to the time limit of 1971, is not prepared to take any more burden of any minority community of Bangladesh.

He said, considering the difficulties and the harrowing experiences of the minorities in Bangladesh and Pakistan, it would be a humanitarian task for India to grant shelter to all those people subjected to injustice and suffering, but at the same time the rest of the country which had not taken any burden of Bangladeshi migrants, should be made to give shelter to those fleeing Bangladesh due to persecution till 2014.

The problem should be solved keeping in view the Assam Accord of 1985 and under no circumstances should Assam be given any additional burden of Bangladeshi migrants, he said.
