Assam boxers shine in Federation Cup

GUWAHATI, Feb 18 � Assam boxers made a mark in the All India Federation Cup Women Boxing Championship.

On the second day of the three-day championship at the SAI indoor Stadium here today, five State women boxers sailed into the final.

It was, however, a disappointing beginning of the day when Anjali Muchahary, who won the inaugural bout yesterday, was eliminated in the semifinal. Anjali was defeated by Dolly Singh of Mizoram by 24-17 points in the 48-51kg weight category.

But till filing of this report, five Assam boxers stormed into the final with convincing victories against their opponents.

Fwilao Basumatary, Rumi Gogoi, Minu Basumatary, Namita Kachari and Alri Boro are the girls who are in the title bouts tomorrow.

In the semifinals this evening Fwilao defeated Hemam Choubi Devi of Manipur 22-7 (54-57kg) while Rumi outplayed her Delhi opponent Renu Jaiswal 16-0 (57-60kg). Later Minu got the better of Sattivada Marthamma of Andhra Pradesh 7-0 (60-64kg) and Namita defeated Ibemcha Devi of All India Police 26-14 (64-69kg). In the last semifinal Alari Boro beat Poonam Mahant of Madhya Pradesh 71 (69-75kg).

Other semifinal results: N Nengeihat Kom (Manipur) bt Mamta Devi (All India Police, 45-48kg) 21-10, Neetu (Haryana) bt Sansree Brahma (Mizoram, 45-48kg) 27-9, Lata Rani Devi (All India Police) bt N Annapurna (Andhra, 51-54kg), 15-7, Sunita Garg (Haryana) bt Ph Sony Chanu (Manipur, 51-54kg), 15-10, Sandhyarani Devi (Manipur) bt Renu Rani (Madhya Pradesh, 57-60kg), 11-3, Suman (All India Police) bt Ankita Gagarta (Madhya Pradesh, 60-64kg) 26-14. Ashlamol Thomas (Andhra) bt Priyanka Choudhury (Haryana, 64-69kg) 18-13, Sweety Boora (Haryana) bt D Satya Ratnam (Andhra, 69-75kg) 21-2, P Lakshmi Latha (Andhra) bt Dipika Lalung (Assam, 75-81kg) 10-3, Darsana (Haryana) got walk over.
