Assam bandh total, peaceful in Barpeta district

BARPETA Dec 10 - The 11-hour long Assam bandh called by NESO protesting the Citizenship (Amendment ) Bill 2019, passed of peacefully in Barpeta district except some stray incidents of clashes between between the bandh supporters and CAB supporters.

The bandh was total all along the district and people came out spontaneously to support it. Educational institutions sans examination routine were closed and business establishments did not open their shutters. Vehicular traffic was off the roads and offices seemed deserted. Banks, insurance companies did not open their offices.

Apart from Barpeta, the busy markets of the district such as Bahari, Mandia, Howli and Sarthebari wore a deserted look during the bandh hours. The bandh at Barpetaroad, the commercial hub of the district and hometown of Ranjit Dass the State president of BJP was total.

Bandh supporters moved along the markets and roads to make it a success where they faced some resistance from BJP and RSS workers at Gahia and Belbari. It must be mentioned here that though the agitational programme was called by NESO, it was supported and participated by almost all the organisations and parties except the ruling BJP.
