Assam bag two golds in Fed Cup

GUWAHATI, Feb 19 � Assam clinched two gold medals in the All India Federation Cup Women Boxing Championship which concluded at the SAI indoor stadium here today.

Fwilao Basumatary (51kg) stole the show on the final day by winning the final bout against Pooja Pannu of Haryana. Fwilao was leading 17-1 in the second round when the referee had to stop the bout. In the other final, Rumi Gogoi (52kg) defeated Y Sandhyarani of Manipur 12-6.

But other Assam boxers, Minu Basumatary (53kg) was beaten by Suman of All India Police 8-12 while Nomita Kachari (54kg) gave a walkover to Ashilamol Thomas of Andhra Pradesh. In the last final, Assam boxers Alari Boro (55kg) went down fighting to Sweety Boora of Haryana 19-14.

In the other finals, S Nengne Eihatrom (48kg) of Manipur beat Neetu of haryana 27-18 while Dolly Singh (49kg) of Mizoram outplayed Ritu Ranga of All India Police 26-12.

In the day�s third final, Sunita Garg (50kg) earned a facile 19-8 point victory against her Police opponent Lata Rani. P Lakshmilata (56kg) of Andhra Pradesh trounced Darshana of Haryana 14-7 while in the last bout of the championship, V Venkata Padmavathi (57kg) defeated Nidhi of Haryana 17-9 for the title.

State Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi attended the closing function as chief guest. He also gave away some medals to the successful boxers. MLAs Robin Bordoloi, Jadab Deka and State boxing body official M Ahmed were also present on the occasion. Assam Amateur Boxing Association, organiser of the championship, brought a souvenir to mark the occasion.
