DHEMAJI, Sept 14 � The Dhemaji district unit of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) is of the opinion that the Chief Ministers of both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh should hold discussions on the issue of flood and erosion caused in Assam by the rivers originating from the hills of Arunachal Pradesh.
It has also demanded immediate constitution of an expert committee comprising experts and the Dhemaji people who possess exceptional knowledge about the district�s problems of flood and erosion. Talking to this correspondent, general secretary of the AJYCP Dhemaji district unit Ratul Bargohain said that the State Government should get the district�s problems studied by a committee comprising experts and knowledgeable Dhemaji people on a 50:50 ratio.
This committee should study the nature of the Dhemaji rivers in an in-depth manner and only then it should submit its report to the Government. Then the Government should formulate the schemes basin-wise, in a comprehensive manner to tackle the problems, said the AJYCP district general secretary.
Or else, the AJYCP will resist implementation of any scheme drawn up for the purpose, he warned. He informed that the Dhemaji district unit of the AJYCP has been demanding steps to control the Gai, Jiadhal, Simen, Siang, Lali and the Brahmaputra for the past several years.
Particularly, for the past three years, the Dhemaji AJYCP unit has been agitating on the issue. It has sent memorandums to the Chief Minister of the State as well as the Prime Minister and the President of the country on the issue on several occasions. The members of the district AJYCP unit staged sit-in demonstration on the issue in front of the Raj Bhawan on December 29, 2009. Over 1,000 members of the district unit of the AJYCP took part in the demonstration.
He said that the people living near the source of the Gai river, inside Arunachal Pradesh, also want that the Chief Ministers of both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh should hold talks on the issue of controlling the river. The people of that area were met by a delegation of the Dhemaji district AJYCP on September 3. The Gai river is known as Siji at that point, said Bargohain.
He also informed that the people of Arunachal Pradesh met by the AJYCP delegation on September 3, had revealed that the Gai river carried unusually huge volume of water on August 15 last.
The AJYCP unit has already spoken to experts and those Dhemaji people who have excellent knowledge about the rivers of district, said Bargohain.
