BISWARATNA DR BHUPEN HAZARIKA SAMANNAY KSHETRA, Feb 4 � The Assam Accord signed as an outcome of the historical six year movement should be reevaluated and considered a fresh. This was the view expressed by veteran thinker, historian and columnist Jatin Borgohain.
Speaking in a seminar held on the occasion of Heramba Kanta Borpujari birth centenary at Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha stage here today morning Borgohain said that March 25, 1971 is not at all relevant neither for the people of Assam in particular and for the people of India as a whole. So the deadline fixed as that day is not acceptable at all. There should be no contract or law which will deviate from our national character.
Dr Sagar Baruah said that concept of nation formation is irrelevant without the study of history. He lamented that though the history of Assam is very old the study is not extensive for which we are lagging behind in many respect. Referring to the clause 6 of the Assam Accord, Dr Baruah said that it is only because of the lack of the historical knowledge that the controversy regarding the Assamese has arose. Definition of Assamese is inherent in the history of Assam and if we study them without prejudice we shall know it.
Baruah also said that to the proper characteristics of geography, politics, demography, language and literature study of history is a must. He demanded that history should be a compulsory subject in the school with a special chapter on Assam and Assam Sahitya Sabha should take adequate measures to draw the attention of the State Government in this regard.
Inaugurating the seminar Dipak Sarma stated that an educated man cannot neglect the importance of history as it is the source of all kind of knowledge and information.
Stating that the history and literature are an interdependent Sarma said that though history is an objective and literature subjective none of them neglect one another.
In his presidential speech Dr Robin Dev Choudhury criticised the State Government for bestowing the responsibility of conducting the historical institutions and organisations to the administrative officers instead of scholars in these field. He rued the ignorance of the Government about the importance of the departments like History and Archaeology, Official Language Implementation and Institution like museum.
Choudhury was very much candid in demanding that the leader to these departments should be experts in the respective fields instead of ACS officers.
