Asom Andolon Manch to move SC

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Sept 24 - Asom Andolon Sangram Manch (AASM), a newly floated body, has threatened to challenge in the Supreme Court the Centres recent notification aimed at benefitting the displaced Hindu Bengalis.

The body, comprising persons who were key players of the Assam Agitation and prominent leaders of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), has former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta as its chief advisor.

A delegation of AASM is currently touring the National Capital and has met President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari and submitted memorandums to them. The AASM is also staging a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on Friday to voice their opposition to the Centres Notification.

The notification issued by Government of India is absolutely arbitrary, illegal and violative of not only the various provisions of the Constitution, but also the basic structure of the Constitution, as it has nullified the Assam Accord and the Citizenship Act 1955, he said.

Briefing newsmen after meeting the President and Vice President, Mahanta said that besides challenging the Notification, they are also exploring the possibility of filing an intervention petition in the ongoing case on illegal migration from Bangladesh.

Slamming the BJP-led NDA Government for bringing the notification, Mahanta alleged that it was done to undermine the Assam Accord. He charged that instead of working towards implementing the Assam Accord, the BJP is going in the opposite direction. First they ratified and implemented the controversial Land Boundary Agreement, then with an eye on 2016 Assembly polls, it has brought out the notification to woo the Bengali Hindu voters.
