ASEB score first win in super league

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 25 Former champions ASEB Sports Club registered their first victory in this seasons GSA Super League.

At the Nehru Stadium here today, riding on a penalty goal ASEB pipped Food Corporation of India Sports Club (FCI) 1-0.

The penalty was converted by Arup Biswas in the 38th minute. ASEB froward Shyam Murah was brought down by FCI defender Akan Khaklary in their goal area and a spot kick was awarded in favour of ASEB.

The winning team should have earned one more spot kick in the 62nd minute when Shyam was again fouled by FRC defender Sochin Basumatary in their box. But this time referee Dipak Dey surprisingly over looked the foul.

In the first session FCI were in control and put ASEB defenders under tremendous pressure. But the their strikers Edenthara, Kailash Gogoi and Biswamitra Basumatary failed to capitalise the scoring opportunities. Their midfielder David March Gayary and Birdwm Basumatary also worked hard.

But the complexion of the match was changed in the second session as the ASEB frontliners, led by Shyam made repeated forays into the FCI goal area. The FCI defenders today left enough passage but the ASEB forwards could not take the advantage. In the 85th minute ASEB striker Sagar Gurung failed to beat the FCI custodian Gobinda Boro in a point blank situation.

With todays victory ASEB completed their first leg of the championship with six points. Gauhati Town Club is at the bottom with four points from six outings.

Todays match: GTC vs Navajyoti.
