ASDC demands free, fair poll

DIPHU, Dec 15 � Though no formal notification regarding the 11th KAAC elections has been declared as yet by the State Election Commission, a formal letter was submitted on Tuesday to the returning officer of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) by the hill�s main political Opposition party ASDC demanding free and fair election.

While appreciating the handing over of the election to the State Election Commission for holding the forthcoming election of the KAAC as instructed by the Government of Assam, the ASDC sought three points of conditions to the KAAC returning officer to ensure all contestants for �level playing ground� in order to hold free and fair election.

As per the condition given by the ASDC- officers hailing from the district should be transferred to maintain neutrally in the conduct of the ensuing election which is the standard practice followed in both Parliamentary and Assembly elections. Voting by ballot as specified under Rule 138 (2) of the Assam Autonomous District Constitution of the District Council Rules 1951 (as per applicable to and amended by the Karbi Anglong District Council 1987) should be adhered to in the ensuing election.

The irregularities in the electoral rolls should be rectified before the holding of election, the ASDC demanded.

The letter, signed by Jagatsing Engti, ex-MLA and general secretary of ASDC appealed the KAAC returning officer to look into the matters with utmost serious to ensure a free and fair election to the KAAC elections 2012.
