ASAK-GNLA shootout leaves 2 dead

SHILLONG, Feb 3 � Gun battle between the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and Achik Songna Anpachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) on Tuesday led to the death of two persons in the remote stretches of East Garo Hills.

One of the dead is 19-year-old girl Manchi Ch Marak, while the other one is an unidentified cadre of the ASAK outfit. One more ASAK cadre is reportedly carrying gunshot injuries.

The incident happened at about 6 am in the village of Bolmaram Agalgre under the Songsak Police Station.

According to sources, the girl received bullet injuries on her hand and back and succumbed to her injuries before help could arrive.

Manchi was a standard X student of a local school and gone to the nearby river to draw water when the gun battle started. She had reportedly ran towards the jungle to take cover, but was hit even as two other civilians managed to escape the fusillade of bullets. The gun battle lasted for around quarter of an hour.

A case has been registered.
