GUWAHATI, Jan 29 Assam bowlers continued their peak form as they bundled out fancied Andhra Pradesh to a paltry total of 137 in their first innings in the Ranji Trophy Group C match.

Assam were 32 for the loss of one wicket at the end of days play. KB Arun Karthik (batting 11), Sib Sankar Roy (batting 0) were at the crease. Today due to bad light 72.5 overs play was possible.

On the opening day of the four-day encounter at the Assam Cricket Associations Barsapara stadium here today, the host team asked the visitors to bat first considering the gloomy weather condition in the morning. The call hit rightly and in the very first over pacer Arup Das trapped opener Srikar Bharat before opening his account.

Andhras dismal form continued as the Assam bowlers maintained fine line and length. They lost half of their wickets before reaching 50. However, skipper Mohammad Kaif, the former Team India player, stuck to the wicket and put his best effort in building the innings. He and Dharma Naren Reddy added 38 runs for the sixth wicket. But that was not enough as Arup and Sarupam Purkayastha continued their devastating form with pace-spin combination. Kaif, the last batsman to be out, contributed 60 off 146 balls. He stayed at the crease for 195 minutes and hit eight boundaries and a six. Kaif showed absolute determination and batted demonstrating perfect technique.

But the days honour will definitely go to Arup and Sarupam. Arup took four wickets for 24 while Sarupam came out with three victims giving away 35 runs. Only three Andhra batsmen could reach double figure today while four of them even failed to open their accounts.
