Arunachal MP urges Centre to develop border areas

By The Assam Tribune

ITANAGAR, Sept 24 Advocating for planned growth of all border areas in Arunachal Pradesh, Lok Sabha member Takam Sanjoy today urged the Centre to develop infrastructure in such areas to counter any threats from outside.

India should make strategic arrangements to develop border areas in Arunachal Pradesh at par with other advanced South East Asian nations so that nobody can claim our territory as theirs, Sanjoy said while addressing a seminar on Renewable Energy Technology: Issues and Prospects at North East Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) here.

Stating that Arunachal with immense hydro-power potential, would serve as the power house of the nation in the near future, Sanjoy said that all upcoming power projects in the State would fulfil fifty per cent energy requirements of India.

The Centre should identify Arunachal as a specialised State keeping in line with the potential areas like hydro power and tourism, he emphasised adding, the State being a late starter in the development process should get due attention.

He disclosed, the Centre had sanctioned an amount of Rs 500 crore to Arunachal Pradesh recently under its ambitious Border Illumination Programme.

Terming the protests by various anti-dam activists against mega dams in the State as baseless, Sanjoy asserted that all care have been taken on apprehensions about impact of such dams.

We should believe in technology not in rumours. All projects have been cleared only after investigating all pros and cons, he said and termed the protests as politically motivated for which, he said, the country cannot suffer. PTI
