ITANAGAR, March 1 � Following reports that Siang River in Arunachal Pradesh has been drying up, an official sources today said that the East Siang district administration is monitoring and keeping surveillance on the matter.
Administration sources said, �As per information received from Water Resource Department, the reduced level of Siang river at GD station at Komlighat is 145 mtr. The average water level taken during lean period, i.e., January and February� 2011 was 148.10 mtrs and the average this year is 148.92 mtrs with an increase of 0.82 mtrs. Due to scanty rain, the ground water level is lower.�
It is worth mentioning here that Yarlung Tsangpo or Yarlung River, the highest river in the world, originates at Tamlung Tso Lake in western Tibet, southeast of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. It later forms the South Tibet Valley and Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon before entering India at Tutting in Arunachal as Siang River and takes the name of Brahmaputra in Assam.
In the Upper Mekong Basin in Yunnan Province, China has reportedly planned to construct eight cascade hydropower dams, the first of which, the Manwan Dam, was completed in 1996.
