Arunachal Guv seeks development of border areas

ITANAGAR, Jan 16 � Several issues, including border area development and coordination amongst the security agencies and State Governments to instill a sense of security among the people, figured in the meeting between Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen Nirbhay Sharma (retd) and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The Governor, who called on the Union Home Minister in the national capital, emphasised on the urgent need for strengthening the effort in developing border areas of the State. In this regard, he suggested expediting road connectivity projects to address the challenge.

Referring to recent carnage in Assam and spillover violent incidents in Arunachal, the Governor suggested on finding appropriate mechanism to ensure proper coordination amongst the security forces to ensure foolproof security in the border areas. He also called for security drills as deterrents.

The Governor also met Dr VK Saraswat, member, NITI Aayog on the same day. During the meeting, Lt Gen Sharma reiterated his stance for Arunachal-specific proposals to meet the �unique� requirements of the frontier State, which shares international boundaries with three countries.

He told Dr Saraswat that the ongoing projects particularly that of road connectivity are not making progress as per the scheduled time frame due to environmental factors. He suggested for considerate and compassionate view while dealing with States like Arunachal Pradesh.

The Governor also met Union Minister of State for Railways Suresh Prabhu in the evening. He called for expediting the railway projects announced by the Union Ministry in the State, particularly the Murkongselek-Pasighat-Tezu-Parasuram Kund-Rupai, which will have immense economic impact and facilitate in pilgrimage and tourism.

The Governor also reiterated his plea for starting Rajdhani Express between Naharlagun and Delhi at the earliest. He also met Dr Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Culture (Independent charge), Tourism (Independent charge) and Civil Aviation and threw light on harnessing the tourism potential of the State and promotion of its ethnic culture. Apart from this, the Governor pressed for expediting Greenfield airport and other airport and Advance Landing Ground projects in the State.
