By The Assam Tribune

NAMPONG (ARUNACHAL), Jan 20 Governor of Arunachal Pradesh General (Retd) JJ Singh today inaugurated the 5th Pangsau Pass Winter Festival here, near Jairampur in Changlang district.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that the Winter festival has been providing a platform to showcase the tourism potential of the State at the national and international levels. The festival stands out for it ethnicity and historical importance of the place. It also provide glimpses of the vibrant cultural identity of the different tribes of Arunachal Pradesh.

The Governor reminded that Arunachal has been chosen as the fourth best region amongst the top ten tourist destinations in the world for the year 2012 by one of the leading travelogues, Lonely Planet. Recently, Arunachal Pradesh has added another feather to its wings after being voted the Favourite Upcoming Destination by a travel magazine Outlook Traveller, he said.

The Governor, who has been advocating for revival of Stillwell Road, the gateway to South East Asia, said that the opening of the road can transform the economy of Arunachal Pradesh by making it a production hub for feeding the Myanmarese and western Chinese markets.

In the absence of land connectivity with China and South-East Asia, the much-hyped Look East Policy has not brought much tangible benefit to the Northeastern region, he lamented.

In his address, Minister Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry and dairy development Setong Sena said that aim of the festival is to bring to the fore the historical importance, rich culture, customs, ethnic diversity and geo-political importance of eastern Arunachal Pradesh.
