Arunachal CM meets Ratan Tata to set up cancer hospitals

By CORRESPONDENT

ITANAGAR, June 19 - Ratan N Tata, philanthropist and chairman of Tata Trusts, has agreed in principle to set up two specialty cancer care centres in Arunachal Pradesh. He also agreed to visit the State soon to finalise the project.

Tata gave this assurance when the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu called on him at Guwahati on Monday and requested him to set up cancer hospitals in the State, which has been recording a very high rate of cancer cases.

Our patients go all the way to Mumbai to the Tata Memorial Hospital and Cancer Research Institute to get treatment for their ailments, incurring huge expenditures. If such centres come up in Arunachal, it will be of much respite to the people, Khandu said while justifying his request.

Later in the day, Khandu attended the groundbreaking ceremony of cancer centres and the launch of the first-ofits-kind cancer care programme in Assam being spearheaded by the Assam Government in collaboration with Tata Trusts. Tata Trusts is setting up 19 new specialty cancer centres in Assam.

Khandu hoped these cancer centres would immensely benefit patients from Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of the North East.

The Chief Minister also said that the BJP Government at the Centre and in the State is focused completely on the welfare of the people. Khandu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah under whose guidance and directions the North East is witnessing the light of progress in all fields.

The massive development in the last couple of years is the result of the positive attention of the Centre towards the North East through the Act East Policy, he added.
