Arunachal Chief Secy for strict laws to check drug menace

ITANAGAR, Dec 10 - Arunachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar has called upon all law-enforcing agencies to understand the magnitude of the drug menace in the State and use its machinery to address the increasing menace of drugs.

Addressing the second meeting of the State-level Multi Disciplinary Coordination Committee for Control of Drugs and Psychotropic Substances here on Monday, the Chief Secretary directed the deputy commissioners and superintendents of police to undertake robust measures to put a check on the rising drug menace in their respective districts in particular and the State in general.

He also directed them to conduct intensive campaigns in schools and colleges involving NGOs, CBOs and other organisations to sensitize the young generation about the ill effects of drug abuse.

To create further awareness, Kumar suggested the State�s Tax, Excise and Narcotics departments to tie up with mobile phone service providers and FM radio channels to send/telecast messages in local dialects about the ill effects of drugs.

During the meeting, instructions were given to undertake extensive and detailed survey of their respective districts and destroy the illicit opium fields in the presence of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) representatives. The Chief Secretary further directed all the DCs and SPs to constitute anti-drugs squads at the earliest.

Further expressing his concern over the alarming drug situation, the Chief Secretary directed the government agencies to act and leave no stone unturned to wipe out the menace from the State.

The meeting was also attended by IGPs Ravindra Singh Yadav and Sagar Preet Hooda, Zonal Director of Narcotics Control Bureau, Rakesh Chandra Shukla, Secretary (Tax, Excise and Narcotics), Anirudh S Singh, Secretary (Women & Child Development), Niharika Rai and other senior government officers.
