Arrest of cops involved in assault of lady scribe demanded

GUWAHATI, Feb 2 � Journalists in the city today held a protest outside the State Secretariat here seeking the arrest of police officials involved in the alleged assault on a lady reporter belonging to private news channel last Saturday.

Carrying banners and placards and covering their mouth with black clothes, scores of journalists from both the print and electronic media took part in the protest.

Members of KMSS and Asom Yuva Parishad, among others, also took part in the protest in support of the demand raised by the journalists, according to one of the media persons who participated in the event.

The journalists were demanding that the police officials involved in the incident � where a lady reporter of DY 365 and a video journalist were allegedly assaulted while they were trying to capture footage of police quarters under Latasil PS should be arrested and dismissed from service.

Later the protestors were arrested by the police and taken away in buses, before being released near Last Gate.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the Electronic Media Forum Assam (EMFA) said, �EMFA� has condemned the incident of arresting agitating media persons from the front of Assam Secretariat on Monday, where they assembled peacefully to protest against the physical mishandling of a lady television reporter on Saturday in Latashil PS and urged the State government to book the culprits under the law.�

It also appealed to all media organizations of Assam and the North East to support the movement and requested the city-based media persons to join in a demonstration tomorrow at 11.30 am in front of Guwahati Press Club (GPC).
