Army ready to tackle militants from Myanmar

LEIMAKHONG (MANIPUR), June 11 � The army is prepared to tackle any situation along the Indo-Myanmar border in the event of any infiltration of insurgents from Myanmar, said Maj Gen Binoy Poonnem, GOC, 57 Mountain Division.

He was replying to question by media persons at a community hall inauguration near Leimakhong army headquarters, 20 km north of Imphal recently.

�We have sealed the border. But it is very encouraging that the Myanmar authority have decided to put a stop to militant camps � we will wait and see,� the Army officer said reacting to a question on the Myanmar Government�s June 10 deadline for Manipur-based militant outfits to shut their camps on its soil.

��Whether that happens or not, we are fully aware of it and fully prepared for it. In case there is any infiltration of insurgents, we will deal with it,� the General added.

The IG of Assam Rifles (South) Maj Gen UK Gurung had few days back stated that the Assam Rifles troops are �vigilant� across the International border between India and Myanmar. �We are taking every precautionary step so that the militants cannot sneak back to our side,� he claimed.

Earlier, the GOC inaugurated a Rs 5 lakh worth community hall at NC Phai village in Senapati district.
