Army denial

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 18 The Army today claimed that it would not be possible for the militants to procure explosives from its firing ranges.

The Army PRO, Lt Col SS Phogat , reacting to Assam Police suspicion that explosives for the Puri Express blast were collected from the firing range of the Army, said that well organized, systematic and safe procedures were followed in the firing ranges of the Army. He said that the new generation fuses used since 2005-06 , automatically explode on achieving the desired range in the target area. The Army also keep track of the bombs that are fired.

Even if a bomb remained unexploded, extracting TNT out of a solid casted artillery shell is not an easy task, said the Army PRO.

It may be mentioned here that the police officials who are investigating into the case, suspected that the explosives used in the blast were collected from the unexploded shells of Army firing range near Tamulpur. The suspicion came following the arrest of the prime accused in the case.
