Army commander visits Manipur

IMPHAL, June 14 � Commander Eastern Army Lt Gen Man Mohan Singh Rai visited Manipur and reviewed the prevailing security situation in the State in the wake of the army operation along Indo-Myanmar border, according to PIB (Defence Wing) sources.

The GOC Desert Corps complemented the troops for the well-executed operation in the wake of the ambush by insurgents on troops of 6 Dogra Regiment on June 4 in Chandel district which left 18 soldiers dead.

The Army commander also discussed with the local commanders the preparation and planning for future operations. Senior Air Force officers were also present during the discussion, the source added.

He stressed the need to ensure measures to prevent attacks by insurgent groups, which are likely to increase. At the same time he emphasised on people-friendly operations so as to cause minimum hardship to the local people. �We must not allow insurgents to vitiate the prevailing peaceful environment in Manipur�, he added.
