Appeal to protect herbal medicinal plants

GOLAGHAT, March 25 - The Banausadhi Udvid Divas (Medicinal Herbal Day) was celebrated at the Khanikar Nagar, Chakandhara, Tetelitol, Golaghat on March 22 under the aegis of the Dr Gunaram Khanikar foundation. This divas was celebrated on the occasion of the 65th birth day of Dr Gunaram Khanikar. Naam prasanga, unauguration of herbs exhibition, museum, open meeting and felicitation programme was held.

The museum and exhibition of herbal medicines was inaugurated by Dr Putul Saikia, principal, Debraj Roy College, Golaghat, who spoke detail of the importance of bio-diversity and urged the gathering to protect forest products and herbal medicinal plants/ The tree plantation was initiated by Dr Dhoniram Saikia.

The open meeting held on the occasion was presided over by Dr Anil Kumar Barua, ex-principal, DR College and was addressed by Dr J Sarma, head of the department, Botany, Debraj Roy College, Khogeswar Handique, president, Senior Citizens� Association, Golaghat. The speakers underlined the manifold achievements of Dr Gunaram Khanikar in the field of herbal medicines. In the meeting a book Sarbadharmar Quiz written by Dr Gunaram Khanikar was released by RK Karki, popularly known as junior Netaji.

In the meeting a prominent khol player Deben Bora and Tuniram Bora were felicitated by the Dr Gunaram Khanikar Foundation. Several organisattions had felicitated Dr Gunaram Khanikar on his 65th birth anniversary.

Earlier, Upen Dutta, president, celebration committee delivered the welcome address. The object of the meeting was explained by Dugdhanath Dutta, secretary, celebration committee and he offered the vote of thanks to all.
