Apeejay workers perform husori to register protest

By CORRESPONDENT

DOOMDOOMA, April 26 - In a unique way of registering protest, the employees of Apeejay Tea Limited performed husori in front of the Registered Office of the tea company situated at Talap near here on Wednesday.

According to information available, as per the Plantation Act of 1951, each and every employee of a tea company engaged in plucking and manufacturing tea in the gardens must receive Dry Mouth Commission in January every year.

But according to a bilateral agreement between the company and the employees, the company promised to pay the DA commission to its employees before Rongali Bihu instead of January. Accordingly, the company should have paid the DA commission for 2018 to the workers before April 13 last.

However, the company did not honour its promise and hence the workers of various tea gardens of the company raised a hue and cry at the Registered Office of the company and demanded it to pay the DA Commission on or before April 23. But the company authority did not respond to the collective request. Hence, workers of various tea gardens of the company came to the Registered Office on Wednesday afternoon and performed husori in front of the office and urged the officials present to come out and listen to them. But when they failed to evoke any response from the officials, the workers started raising slogans against the company authority.

At long last, Deputy Manager (Accounts) Chandan Saha came out and informed the protesting workers that the company would release their DA commission before April 30 next. He also produced an email from Saumitra Paul (GM, Finance) of the company on this matter.
