APCC plea to Chief Election Commissioner

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 30 - The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has urged the Chief Election Commissioner of India to initiate steps against State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for allegedly violating the election code of conduct.

The APCC, in a memorandum to the Chief Election Commissioner, stated that after the model code of conduct for the by-elections in Assam for the Lakhimpur parliamentary seat and the Baithalangso assembly seat came into force, Minister Sarma on Wednesday announced that 1,100 youths of Baithalangso and Karbi Anglong would be appointed in Diphu Medical College, a hill university would be set up in Karbi Anglong district and one engineering college would be set up at Baithalangso.

These announcements are going to influence the voters and hence are gross violation of the model code of conduct, said the APCC, demanding immediate action against the Minister.

The party also prayed for steps to restrain the State Government from issuing advertisements in print and electronic media with the photographs of Chief Minister and other ministers till the by-elections are over.
