TURA, April 7 � A delegation from Achik National Volunteers� Council (ANVC) and its breakaway group, the ANVC (B) held a meeting with Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officials in Delhi yesterday to review the status of the agreed text for settlement and the delay in the GHADC elections.
The MHA team was led by Sambhu Singh, Joint Secretary (North East). The ANVC was represented by Dilash Marak, Wanding Marak and Chaki Sangma and the ANVC (B) by Bernard N Marak, Mukosh Marak, Deepan Momin, Tokyo Marak and Panseng Marak.
According to sources, the meeting was called to discuss the problems being faced by the now disbanded groups. The delay in the rehabilitation package that has been leading to a lot of disgruntlement in the disbanded outfits was discussed in the meeting.
�The MHA has asked for revarification of the cadres. We have assured full cooperation in the matter which will be completed before June 15�, said Bernard N Marak, chairman of ANVC (B) over phone from Delhi.
Further, the continued delay in the holding of elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) was discussed in the meeting. Opposition to the 4th extension of the term of the GHADC has grown stronger, it was pointed out.
�The amendment to the 6th Schedule is taking time. As such we have asked the MHA to hold immediate elections to the GHADC. The agreement was that elections need to be held immediately and it will be communicated to the State Government�, added Marak.
The change in the 6th Schedule will see addition of more powers to the GHADC while also increasing the number of seats from the present 30 to 40.
