Anti-mega dam stir under NAPM banner

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 7 Social activist Swami Agnivesh today said that the anti-mega dam movement, especially against those coming up in the North East, would be launched centrally under the banner of National Alliance for Peoples Movement (NAPM) to be led by social activist and founder of Narmada Bachao Andolan Medha Patkar.

A decision on this would be taken during the three-day meeting beginning on August 3 at Jantar Mantar under the banner of India Against Corruption, Swami Agnivesh told mediapersons here today.

Big dams would lead to ecological disaster, especially in the North East region, which is a high seismic zone. We want the Government to stop all the ongoing construction works and instead go for small dams, he said.

He also divulged that the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and the AASU would jointly carry out the movement in the State.

Swami Agnivesh decried the Governments apathy towards the cause of the peasants and urged Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to clear his stand vis--vis the peasants movement.

Asked to comment on the recent June 22 violence, Agnivesh said that an impartial inquiry is required and those resorting to violence should not be spared.

On the Jan Lokpal Bill, the social activist said that if the draft of the Bill does not emerge as a strong one as desired, the anti-graft crusade will be resumed under the leadership of Gandhian Anna Hazare.
