NORTH LAKHIMPUR, July 3 The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Praichad today took strong exception to the reported resumption of construction work on the 10,000 MW Lower Subansiri hydro-electric project at Gerukamukh by the NHPC, Arunachal Pradesh government and by the Centre.

The Lakhimpur district unit of the AJYCP took out a protest march in North Lakhimpur against the move and burnt effigies of the NHPC. The slogan-chanting AJYCP members denounced the NHPC for its efforts to resume construction work and warned Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nobam Tuki for his hurry to restart the construction work. The AJYCP also demanded clarification by Lakhimpur MP and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on the issue. This was stated by Pradeep Sharma, president and Saurav Das, secretary of AJYCP Lakhimpur unit in a press release.

The AJYCP said that construction work of the Gerukamukh dam was stalled following an agitation by them along with KMSS, TMPK, etc., and a discussion on January 5, 2012. However, the release added, the NHPC is now readying itself to restart the construction of the dam with the help of the Centre by ignoring the concerns of the people of Assam. The AJYCP warned the NHPC for these developments and said that they wont allow the construction work of the dam at any cost.

The AJYCP also condemned Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nobam Tuki for his efforts to restart the construction of the dam by ignoring the safety and security of the people living on the downstream areas of the Subansiri. They warned the Arunachal government of economic blockade if their demands were not met.

The AJYCP said that Sonowal had used the Gerukamukh dam as a poll issue and criticized him for his silence over the present developments. They would launch a massive agitation against him in the coming days if Sonowal does not clarify his stand, the release added.

Sending a warning to the NHPC, the AJYCP said that if the construction work begins every concerned parties connected with the project would face dire consequences.
