AGARTALA, Dec 2 - Normal life was affected during a bandh called in Tripura�s tribal areas on Monday by the Tipraland State Party (TSP) against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).
Life came to a complete standstill at Khumulwng, which houses the headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). Officials, employees and teachers preferred to stay at home fearing untoward incidents.
Business establishments and shops remained closed, while most schools did not open due to the strike. The bandh evoked good response in Jirania subdivision in West Tripura district, and in Khowai, Mohanpur, Teliamura and Jampuijala of Khowai and Sepahijala districts. But no untoward incident was reported during the bandh.
A senior police officer said the bandh was largely peaceful. �Tight security measures were deployed. There was no untoward incident,� he said, adding that vehicular movement on national highways and state highways was normal.
Earlier, in a statement, Indigenous People�s Front of Tripura (IPFT) president NC Debbarma had asked party leaders and supporters to support the bandh. Sources said this was politically important, as the support of the IPFT, an ally of BJP-led coalition government, worked in favour of the TSP, a lesser known tribal party.
In view of the bandh, Tripura University postponed and rescheduled the TDP/TDPH 1st, 3rd and 5th semester examinations. The Elementary Education department also postponed and rescheduled the examinations for classes 10, 11, 12.
Meanwhile, another tribal party � Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) � has called a 12-hour national highway and railway blockade on December 3, protesting against the CAB. The INPT will continue to oppose the CAB and the party has made its stand clear before Union Home Minister Amit Shah, said party general secretary Jagadish Debbarma.
