Another 2G-type scam brewing in NE: BJP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 14 Hydro power, one of the most-hyped sectors in the North East, has come under scathing criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which on Monday stated that another 2G-type scam was in the offing in the region in the form of a hydro power project scam.

Addressing mediapersons here, Kirit Somaiya, national secretary of the BJP alleged that dozens of memorandums of understanding were signed within a short span of time, and newly formed companies with zero experience and no financial strength have been allotted hydro power projects in Arunachal Pradesh worth thousands of crores of rupees.

Somaiya also alleged that politicians of Assam were involved in the hydro scam and they have formed companies just to bag the hydro projects.

Corruption in the North East has reached an unprecedented level. The BJP will not allow another 2G-type scam in the region, warned Somaiya, informing that the party has already chalked out an action plan to deal with the issue of corruption in the region.

Somaiya slammed the Congress governments in the North East and at the Centre over the rampant corruption and pointed out that five Congress Chief Ministers in the region were directly and indirectly involved in scams.

Party president Nitin Gadkari will lead a delegation to the President and submit the partys fact-finding committee report on the scams in the North East. The party will also use the floor of the Parliament to raise the issue of corruption in the region. Opposition leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley will submit the report in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha respectively and press for a special debate on those scams.

The issue of corruption in the North East will also come up at the partys national office bearers meeting scheduled for February 15 at Kolkata. The party will approach the Supreme Court too.

We would like to know from the Prime Minister who represents Assam whether a single investigation on the scams in the State and the region has been completed, asked Somaiya, adding that the party would wait to see the Prime Ministers reaction if any one of the seven ministers in the Gogoi government alleged to be involved in the NC Hills scam is given ticket in the coming Assembly elections.
