Anomalies in MBBS, BDS admissions: AMSSA

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 31 - Alleging gross anomalies in the MBBS and BDS admissions through use of fake tea garden labourer certificates, the Adivasi Mukti Sangram Samity of Assam (AMSSA) has appealed to State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure that the deserving candidates belonging to tea tribes and ex-tea tribes are not deprived of their rights.

Alleging that the Directorate of Medical Education is giving away the reserved seats to non-tea garden labourer (TGL) students, the Samity demanded a proper inquiry into the matter to bust the fake certificate scam.

Referring to an order by the Department for Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes, Government of Assam, nullifying the caste status of two candidates, the Samity said that despite the matter coming to light, no action was taken by the authorities concerned against the candidates furnishing fake caste certificates.

Last year, we complained to the Directorate of Medical Education against the admissions of Pratik Kumar and Shibani Kairi on tea garden labourer and ex-tea garden labourer quota. An order dated November 26, 2015 by the Chairman, State Level Scrutiny Committee (SLSC), Department of WPT and BC also confirmed that both the students did not belong to the tea garden labourer or ex-tea garden labourer community. But even after seven months of the order, no action has been taken by the authorities, the Samity alleged.

There are a number of other such cases, which prove that the original tea tribe students are deprived of their right to study MBBS and BDS, under the quota meant for them. The Health Minister must take immediate action to give justice to the tea tribe students and punish the guilty, the Samity added.
