GUWAHATI, Dec 3 - Huge anomalies have been alleged in the Basketball Association of Assam (BAA) by a group of guardians. The parents claimed that the BAA secretary Mukut Medhi is using his position to streamline his financial greed and not for the development of the game.
The guardians of the players in a press release today claimed that due to misdeed and misconduct of Medhi, the State U-14 team was barred from participating in the 45th Sub Junior National Basketball Championship held at Kangra, Himachal Pradesh in November. It is revealed that, after picking the State team for the Sub Junior Nationals, Medhi asked all the selected players to deposit Rs 7,500 for registration in the Basketball Federation of India (BFI), whereas the registration fees per player is Rs 320, and instructed all the parents to take all the selected players to the competition venue in their own custody, which is not a normal practice as per rules. It is the responsibility of the State association to take the teams to the competition venue meeting all the expenditure.
The Assam team reached Kangra in time, but the team was not allowed to participate in the championship by the BFI due to some miscommunication with the BAA, alleged the parents.
The parents informed that Medhi even abused a lady parent using abusive words. Later taking a courageous step, a complaint was lodged at the Paltanbazar Police Station here following which the BAA secretary was arrested and produced in the court.
