Annual lecture of college dept held

GUWAHATI, Dec 11 - The second annual lecture of the Political Science Department of Handique Girls� College on the topic �Compelling Narratives: US, China and India�s Grand Strategy in Outer-Space�, was held on December 8, a press release received here today said.

The lecture was held in collaboration with the IQAC via online platform on Cisco Webex. Elenchus, the journal of the department was also released on the day. The programme started with the welcome address by the head of the department Dr Archana Sarma, followed by a speech delivered by the Principal, Dr Utpal Dutta. Professor Nani Gopal Mahanta spoke briefly on the importance of the topic.

Dr Namrata Goswami, an independent scholar and author and a subject matter expert in International Affairs with the Futures Laboratory, Alabama, USA delivered the lecture. Her expertise and engagement greatly benefited the students in opening up a zeal of interest in the outer space domains.

Dr Goswami spoke on various issues connected to the topic like the growing sophisticated strategic culture of China to emerge as a dominant power in outer space; anti-satellite weapons, Mars Mission, etc.; Importance of rich resources of the moon like platinum, lithium, iron ore and the technology development in US and China to extract minerals from the lunar surface and asteroids; Relevance and need of future research in India on outer space so as to stand at par with China and US�s bold and ever growing space technology.

She also spoke of greater participation of women scholars and researchers in the field of space.
