Anniversary of Irabot observed in Manipur

IMPHAL, Sept 30 - The 119th birth anniversary of Hijam Irabot, popularly known as �Lamyanba Irabot� was observed throughout the State today.

Irabat Celebration Committee (ICC) organised a State- level function at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen at Palace Compound here with the participation of people from all walks of life.

The committee awarded the Hijam Irabot Award to former Minister RV Mingthang for his relentless efforts and contribution for the maintenance of peace and harmony among various communities. Prof Rose Mangshi Haokip was honoured with the unity award for her efforts to bring unity in the State. Thiyam Meghachandra Journalist Award was given to Irengbam Arun, Editor of daily vernacular Echel Express for his contribution in the field of journalism.

Most of the speakers at the function highlighted the contributions made by Hijam Irabat for socio-economic and political development of the people. Irabot, who is regarded as a freedom fighter, politician and social activist, was born on September 30,1896 and died on September 26,1951.
