Anjali wins opening bout in Fed Cup boxing

GUWAHATI, Feb 17 � State boxer Anjali Muchahary made a flying start in the All India Federation Cup Women Boxing Championship which got off to a colourful start at the SAI indoor stadium here today. Anjali recorded a 21-16 victory against Shabana of Delhi in the 48-51kg weight category. With this hard fought victory, Anjali is through to the semifinal.

Earlier, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi attended the opening ceremony as chief guest. MLA Capt Robin Bordoloi and Jadab Deka were also present on the occasion where Assam Amateur Boxing Association secretary Hemanta Kumar Kalita welcomed the gathering. Altogether 67 leading women boxers from eight affiliated units of Indian Boxing Federation are taking part in the prestigious event. The participating units are � Manipur, Haryana, All India Police, Mizoram, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Assam.

However, ace women boxers like MC Mary Kom and Sarita Devi are not participating in this championship. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said Assam women boxers are really doing well in the national circuit and hoped in coming days the State will be able to produce more champion woman boxers. Gogoi also thanked the State boxing body for successfully hosting some important boxing championships.
