AMSU stages dharna at scribe�s residence

DOOMDOOMA, Nov 26 - The Kakopothar regional committee of the All Moran Students� Union (AMSU) yesterday staged a dharna in front of the residence of Hemanta Kumar Saikia, local Correspondent of a Guwahati-based vernacular daily, over a news published by him in the daily on November 24 in which some allegations were brought against a few leaders of the union.

Saikia, who is also the secretary of the Kakopothar Press Club and an executive member of the Tinsukia District Journalists� Association (TDJA), was not at his residence when the student body members staged the dharna. The student body alleged that the scribe is trying to malign the image of the AMSU by publishing news with wrong information.

Later, Kakopothar Police reached Saikia�s residence and brought the situation under control.

The agitating student body later sent a letter to the TDJA against the activity of Saikia.

Reacting to the matter, the TDJA today held an urgent executive meeting at the Tinsukia Press Club and discussed the matter. Saikia denied all the allegations brought against him in the meeting. The meeting was convinced with his explanation and unanimously decided not to send any news of AMSU from Tinsukia district till the AMSU central committee takes action against its Kakopothar regional committee.

After the meeting, a delegation of TDJA met Tinsukia SP Mugdhajyoti Mahanta and informed the matter. The SP assured of security to the scribe. He also told that if required a PSO could be provided to Saikia.
