Amrit Kumar Phookon passes away

GUWAHATI, Oct 13 - Former Advocate General of Assam, Amrit Kumar Phookon passed away at Fortis Hospital at around 12.30 am in Kolkata today. Phookon, 71, was ailing for quite sometime.

Born in 1944 at Jorhat, Phookon started his career in the Gauhati High Court in 1972 and served the State Government as senior advocate for many years.

He also served Arunachal Pradesh as advocate general for about six years.

In 2001, he became the Advocate General of Assam and remained in the post for 14 years, the longest term served by any Advocate General in the State.

It was only in December 2014 that he resigned from the post due to his ailments.

He leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter, besides a host of relatives and well wishers.

Phookon, besides being a lawyer of repute, was also an avid sportsman and a musician.

His mortal remains, after being brought to Guwahati this afternoon, was taken to the Gauhati High Court premises and then to his residence at Geetanagar area where floral tributes were paid to the departed soul.

His last rites were performed at the Navagraha crematorium later this evening. People from various walks of life attended the funeral.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Lawyers� Association and the All Guwahati Students� Union have condoled the death of Phookon, terming it as a great loss to the society.
