Amri Karbi bodies threaten stir

By Correspondent

JORABAT, Sept 12 - Several Amri Karbi tribal organisations led by Amri Karbi Students Union leader Hareswar Rahang have threatened to launch an agitation if their demands are not met. The first programme will be a march to the Raj Bhawan on September 21 to submit a memorandum to the Governor.

The demands include ST(H) status to the Amri Karbis as per the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India, autonomous council for the Amri Karbi community, protection of tribal belts and blocks, a halt to the developmental works in Dimoria in the name of the Tiwa Autonomous Council, ban on the election of the Tiwa Autonomous Council in Dimoria region and declaration of Dimoria as an autonomous region of the Amri Karbi tribal community. Rahang said the government was trying to play politics by simply granting the Amri Karbi Development Council. He warned of a vigorous agitation if the demands are not met.
