Amri Karbi bodies stage hunger strike in city

JORABAT, Jan 31 - Six Amri Karbi tribal organisations staged a hunger strike in Guwahati on Friday for demands that have been lying unaddressed for a long time.

The Amri Karbis of Dimoria sat on the hunger strike for 7 hours in VIP Road area, in support of several demands including grant of Scheduled Tribe (Hills) status, cancellation of the Tiwa Autonomous Council polls in the six constituencies in Dimoria region, an autonomous council for Amri Karbis and scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, among others.

The six tribal organisations are the Amri Karbi Students� Union, Amri Karbi National Council, Amri Karbi Arloso Asem, Amri Karbi Bangthe Asem, Amri Karbi Tsornam Ahartsi Asem and Amri Karbi Ruktsak Asem.

Speaking to The Assam Tribune, Ramen Kathar, general secretary of the Dimoria unit of the Amri Karbi Students� Union, said, �The government has been ignoring our demands for a long time. If the government does not address our demands soon, we will opt for democratic agitations only up to a period. If our demands continue to fall on deaf ears of the government, we will have to opt for a vigorous agitation.�
