Call for safety measures on Umananda island

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, June 18 - The Kamrup Metro district administration has asked the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to erect fences along sensitive and accident-prone locations on the Umananda island.

This comes following various accidents during recent years where people have accidentally slipped and fallen into the Brahmaputra River while visiting the island, including one recent incident involving a student of the Cotton College.

The administration has issued directions to install signages at such danger-prone and other areas of the island.

It has also asked the River Police to chalk out a security plan for the island and set up a permanent post there.

The SDRF has been told to keep a boat permanently positioned on the Umananda island to deal with any exigency.

The GMDA has also been asked to set up a temporary camp at Umananda for benefit of security personnel and other staff.

Dr M Angamuthu, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro, had earlier this week made an inspection of Umananda island to look at various security aspects. He was accompanied by officials from the City Police, River Police, SDRF, GMDA and the Archaeological Survey of India.
