SILCHAR, April 16 - The 125th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar was observed at Assam University, Silchar, on Wednesday.
A statue, erected in front of the administrative building of the varsity, was unveiled by Professor Ranju R Dhamala, vice-chancellor in-charge of the university, in presence Professor B Mate, former Pro vice-chancellor, Niharendra Narayan Thakur, chairman of Silchar Municipal Board, Parimal Suklabaidya and several others.
This was followed by recitation of the Preamble by Dr Tineshewari Devi in a function held at the Bipin Chandra Paul auditorium. A pocket dairy containing quotations of Dr Ambedkar was also launched on the occasion.
Dr M Gangabushan and Dr Amitabha Singh spoke on the life history and contribution of Dr Ambedkar. Dr Ajit Kumar Das, president of Assam University SC/ST Employees� Welfare Association, also addressed the gathering on the occasion and demanded the establishment of Ambedkar Chair in the Assam University which exists in other universities of the country.
Teachers and non-teaching staffs, students, AUTA president Dr Samera Behera and secretary of varsity�s SC/ST Employees� Welfare Association Ranjit Das were also present in the programme.
It is worth mentioning that the statue has been crafted by students of the Department of Visual Arts of the university under the supervision Dr Ganesh Nandi, Assistant Professor of the Department.
It was a long-standing demand from the Assam University SC and ST Employees� Welfare Association to install the statue of Dr Ambedkar in front of university administrative building. Association Professor Somnath Dasgupta laid down foundation stone of the statue in October, 2015.
An audio-visual presentation on the life and works of Dr Ambedkar was presented by Dr LN Sethi, chairperson of the celebration committee.
