Amarjyoti surrenders in Varanasi

GUWAHATI, July 23 � Amarjyoti Kalita, the prime accused in the July 9 molestation case on the GS Road in Guwahati, has surrendered before the police at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh today.

Police sources here confirmed the arrest and said that a team of Assam Police has left for Varanasi this afternoon to bring Amarjyoti back to the State. The team is likely to return tomorrow.

�Amarjyoti Kalita has been arrested with the help of Varanasi Police, and we are in the process of bringing him to Assam,� AP Tiwary, SSP, City, said.

According to family sources of Amarjyoti, he surrendered before Uttar Pradesh Police today and conveyed this to his family members at Guwahati.

Amarjyoti who was named as the main accused in the molestation incident that shook the nation had been absconding since July 10. A nationwide alert was sounded following his escape from Assam.

Meanwhile, the three-day police remand of Gaurav Jyoti Neog, a TV journalist and another accused in the case, expires tomorrow.

Police had identified 17 accused in the molestation case from video footages of the incident, and with Amarjyoti�s arrest, the number of arrested persons has gone up to 13.
