Amarjyoti gets 5-day police custody

GUWAHATI, July 26 � Amarjyoti Kalita, the prime accused in the July 9 molestation incident, today appeared before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup, which remanded him to five days police custody.

Kalita has been booked under Sec 341/143/294/323/354/379/366/511/392 and Sec 34 of the Indian Penal Code. Of them, Sec 366/392 and 379 are non-bailable.

Kalita, who was absconding since the incident, surrendered before the Varanasi police on Monday. He was brought to Guwahati on Tuesday.

Advocate Bhaskar Dev Konwar appeared on behalf of the accused.

The court today also directed the investigators to maintain the case diary in a proper manner.

Earlier, Kalita was brought to the Court premises in a special van under tight security. The court premises were cordoned off by security personnel since morning and even media persons were kept at bay.

Sources, meanwhile, informed that the accused has admitted that he was under high influence of alcohol when the incident took place on the GS Road on July 9.

A senior police officer said that Amarjyoti has so far cooperated with the investigators and he will be questioned on various other aspects.

Meanwhile, police has arrested Rubul Ali, another accused in the July 9 incident and he will be produced in the court tomorrow.

The Special Investigation Team formed to probe the incident has so far arrested 15 accused of the molestation case.
